I really like Avril Lavigne music, if for no other reason than I enjoy pretending to be emo for three minute spurts. But Avril seems to want to be a pop star. Her new video for “Girlfriend” has her sporting blonde hair, mini shorts and fishnets, and frankly, a bitchy attitude. (I’m not really comfortable with the theme of this video, with her stealing another girl’s boyfriend. That kind of girl vs. girl competition over a guy is usually understood as thoroughly anti-feminist) I also used to really like Avril Lavigne because she had her own style and her own personality (she had a LOT of personality), but she appears to want to be a really girly pop star. I know I said before that I liked Paris Hilton, but we really only need ONE Paris Hilton. What do you think?
