I am several weeks into the research for my book, Supergirls Speak Out: the Secret Dilemma of Overachieving Girls (January 2009, Touchstone/Fireside), and I am LOVING it. It’s not only a fun “job,” but also really personally gratifying.
There is something really cathartic for me about writing. Even if I’m doing really formal reporting, it feels so good to just let my fingers run around my keyboard and see what happens.
But what’s more special for me, especially with respects to writing this book, is the opportunity to speak with so many impressive young women. In fact, (something that I’ll express in the book) I’m even experiencing little twinges of jealousy towards my interview subjects. Yes, I too am a Supergirl, but it’s amazing how much some young women today have accomplished so young! I definitely think Generation Y young women are going to change the world. It’s so, almost unfathomable, for me to imagine where young women who are 16 with precise writing skills and three page-long resumes will be in ten years. I have a feeling that many of Manhattan’s corner office windows will be increasingly pink-tinted in upcoming years (not that guys can’t style pink).
Yes–writing a book is a little daunting. But it’s also immensely empowering to be able to express oneself, and not be spoken for. Shoot me an e-mail, Supergirls, if you want to speak for yourselves.
