I just read Kate’s post on all-girls schools, and, now I wonder, could that have been good for me? I am probably just second-guessing myself about my choice of school, (a huge, really academic, with a really great arts program–bigger than most LA private schools,) but, still I wonder…
For a really long time, actually up until now, I had something against all-girls schools. I didn’t believe in them, because, I thought that they weren’t realistic. I guess there are two outcomes:
a) you go, you love it, you learn about yourself, and gain confidence in yourself and around boys
b) you go, you love it, you gain confindence in speaking with girls around, but shy away in the shadow of a boy
I was overlooking option a and going to b. But, I still think that option B is a lot more likely if you feel you HAVE to go to an all-girls school. I am friends with a lot of boys, so that might be weird for me, but intimate classes, not really worrying what you look like, that really sounds nice. I think there are a lot of pros and cons to it for me, but I think I would have at least liked to look at some of the all-girls schools. In LA, there is only one all-boys school that I’ve heard of, and it’s high school but there are probably more. Why are there less all-boys schools than all-girls? Is it because boys usually feel less pressure to speak up then girls do in class? It seems odd to me that the thought of an all-boys school seems way less logical then an all-girls school, is it because I’m a girl or because in some way, boys are more confident?
I now think that all girls schools can be great for a lot of people, and they can be bad too. I think it just depends on who you are as a person, as a girl, and as a woman.

maddie, i agree with you. the greatest thing for anyone is to go to a school that is the best fit for them, where they will feel most comfortable. it just so happened mine was an all-girls school, but don’t get me wrong, i had a LOT of trouble with guys when i got to college. i didn’t know how to act around them! i’m still pretty awkward but 4 years at AU helped. haha good job on this post!

This debate will never end and everyone will have his/her own idea over this topic. There are many consequences of co-ed schools as well as same sex schools.
