I have really light hair that is pretty damaged from dyeing my hair, swimming in my pool, brushing my hair too much, tanning, etc. etc. And I’ve finally found the best shampoo EVER for my hair that leaves it silky and stronger.
The problem? The shampoo is called “Dumb Blonde.”
I can take a joke or two about dumb blondes. In fact, some of them are pretty funny. But I don’t think that major cosmetic companies (Dumb Blonde is a Bed Head product) should be semi-endorsing these stereotypes. I think it’s one of these things that you could ignore, but on the other hand, I think many of the “isms” in our culture (the sexism, the racism, the classism) thrive because of small, seemingly negligible stereotypes engrained in our brains.
So, what to do? Stop buying the shampoo? Write to the company? Ignore it?
I think I actually will write to Bed Head, because it’s a really fantastic product (my hair hasn’t felt this healthy in such a long time!) tarnished by a very DUMB name.

i think you should write to them and maybe even try and get a free gift certificate. “) i wrote to the makers of the patch telling them i wouldn’t use the product because it wasn’t clear and it was only “flesh” colored (i.e. pink for white people and no one else) and i actually received a (poor) but albeit… a response.

I think you should still use the shampoo, it’s good for your hair so don’t punish your body for other people’s lack of coming up with a clever/even remotely original name. I think the whole “dumb blonde” thing is just kind of ridiculous, just a joke so don’t let other people’s lack of creativity hurt your beautiful self–they don’t deserve the power to do that.

Just like the commercial for another hair product: “Well brunettes, at least your mom loves you!” Society has stupid stereotypes that unfortunately advertisers think sell. But hey, you bought it because it works, and THAT my friend, makes you a pretty smart blonde in my book. Much love :o)
