I was at a friend’s graduation party recently. She has roughly two months off before beginning graduate school studying business. I truly admire this woman not only for her insatiable desire to keep striving to better herself, but also for her ability to realize that even though she does possess this insatiable desire, she is appreciative of all that she has already achieved. This woman’s teenage babysitting service put the Babysitter’s Club to shame. My friend’s ideal career is to run her own company. Some days she wants to head in the direction of a book store, other days she thinks of running an interior design company. I love her ability to be flexible.
After I came home from her party, I found Sarah Strauss. “My friend and I got laid off from an architecture firm on the exact same day, so we decided to take our severance money and spend a week in Key West” (Strauss). Needless to say that vacation changed her life. It helped to convince Sarah and her friend (both Yale University graduates) to begin their own company, Bigprototype.
Maybe it was my mood, maybe it was because I just returned from being in the company of this amazing entrepreneur, but this short interview made my night. I know it doesn’t reveal much, but it’s always wonderful to read about young women actually following their dreams (no matter how uncommon they seem). It’s even more rewarding when their dreams (professional or personal) not only come true but completely surpass the original goal. Like Sarah Strauss, my friend is going to bring to the world something new, fresh and undoubtedly something to remember.

I am a young, female, hispanic college student searching for my place in the world of architecture and sustainable design. I was impressed after reading about Sarah Strauss and her firm, Bigprototype. I love to hear about strong women pursuing their dreams in the professional world, it gives me hope and inspires me to do the same!
