I think knowing you is the start of a pretty big adventure.
- Hairspray
It’s not often that a movie comes along that appeals to all ages and has more than one great message. Hairspray is set to come out at the end of this week, with a huge cast of big-name stars. However, the star, Nikki Blonsky, is 19 years old and a newcomer to the movie scene. She was literally just a normal kid like us, 18 years old and working at her local Coldstone Creamery in Great Neck, NY. She scored the role of a lifetime with Hairspray.
Two of my sisters saw the stage show when it came to Pittsburgh and they loved it. The movie takes place in 1960s Baltimore and follows the story of Tracy Turnblad, a teen from 1962 Baltimore who believes that segregation is wrong and wishes to integrate her favorite dance show, The Corny Collins Show. I have no idea if she ends up being successful, but I do know that I think it’s wonderful to teach today’s children what their mothers and fathers went through some 40 years ago.
Also, I think that just seeing Tracy and all that she can do is such a great inspiration for bigger girls today. I mean, look at how this plus-sized character can dance and how she achieves greatness in her own special way, dancing on TV for all the world to see. Go see the movie to see if she gets the guy, because I’m curious to see myself.
I also am really happy with the fact that musicals have recently become popular again. I think that by having such well-known and well-liked stars in Hairspray, teens will see that it’s cool to like musicals again.
I’ll do a follow-up review sometime this weekend, since my sisters and I are planning on going to see the movie. Naturally, my brother thinks we’re nuts. Hairspray is in theaters everywhere this Friday.

I went to high school in Baltimore… and there’s something Waters does that captures its melancholy and awkward sparkle.
