A Nation fellow went to the College Republicans National Conference to make a video of the crazy things that the College Republicans say and do.
Generation Chickenhawk: The Unauthorized College Republican Convention Tour from huffpost and Vimeo.
As a journalist, this worries me a bit, because I think he sort of tricked his sources into speaking with him by pretending that he, too, was conservative, but it’s still a troubling video. I don’t like the idea of praying to erase one’s sexual questioning (because the guy is right: virtually everyone at one point harbors feelings towards the same sex, and you take some time to figure it out!) and Tom DeLay’s comment about how if fetuses hadn’t been aborted we wouldn’t need immigrants is just ridiculous.
But then again, this video does say something about being conscious of how you come off at political conferences.
Every time I would go to NOW conferences, some of the things people would say and do were absolutely ridiculous (like singing along with crappy, excessively radical folksingers and talking about how we should subvert the dominant paradigm by instead of wearing stilletos, using them as weapons to hit potential rapists with) and it was like, “OMG, how are you making feminists look right now?” At one point, there was a mole in a NOW conference that I went to, who did a pretty critical (and mostly true) write-up of the conference for a conservative women’s web-site.
Anyway, I think Max Blumenthal (the guy in the above video) did do a good job. My only hope for him is that the next time he goes undercover, he won’t be carried outside when he is discovered.

He interviewed some really inarticulate students. I guess they are just trying to fit in with Dubya and De Lay… No wonder they are attacking intellectuals and academic freedom because critical thinking and thoughtful expression escapes their pea sized brains.
I need to get a DRAFT COLLEGE REPUBLICANS shirt. I loved the bumper sticker. I loved that he was undercover… It showed how they are anti-free speech. Campus Progress actually invites conservative media to create an open forum for debate…
