I have been online for the past few hours researching anti-street harassment actions women across the country have been organizing to fight sexism on the street. I’m really passionate about ending street harassment and making the streets safe for women and girls. Anyway, as I was web surfing I discovered a cool website called OneAngryGirl.net with lots of cool t-shirts and information about businesses that we shouldn’t give our valuable dollars to as progressive and fierce women and girls. I LOVE a good boycott because in this economy the meaning of it impacts our opposition even when they aren’t trying to listen or take action to right their wrongs… Many times we have seen how collective boycotts have worked to make change from the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Cesar Chavez’s famous worker’s boycott, and most recently Walmart (who still has a long way to go, but at least they provide Emergency Contraception now).
Anyhow, I think it is important for us to spend our money wisely and responsibly if we want to make real change. Sometimes it can be a simple change… like buying Alternative Apperal instead of American Apperal…others it can be huge like buying all of your produce locally from farmers in your local farmer’s market.
I don’t know about you, but I feel so much better giving my money to positive working people than corporations who don’t care if I live or die. I also think it is important to show big business that consumers DO care about ethics, diversity, the environment, and labor rights.
Check it out and tell all of your friends…

Check out this page to find out how businesses you patron donate their lobbying dollars during the elections… You may be surprised about some. Don’t let a hip and youthful exterior drive you to think a company is progressive. I’m still working on lessening the money I spend per year at Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters for that reason… Even though I love the clothes.

I don’t know if this is what you’re referring to for “street harassment,” but I think it’s the funniest thing to actually stop and TALK to the guys who make kissing noises or mumble stuff about your body under their breath as you walk by. I’m like “Hi! How are YOU?” Maybe if more women did this instead of simply being creeped out, they’d realize that we’re human beings too.

OMGGG I try to do that as much as possible. But not in a friendly way at all, because I get seriously offended by street harassment. This one time, this kind of creepy guy said something really foul to me, and I was like,
“Make yourself useful and give me directions! Where’s Lanier Street?!”
Haha…
