Just as I promised…a “Hairspray” review!
I just came back from seeing Hairspray with my sister Annie and OH MY GOD I AM IN LOVE. I have about a dozen or so favorite movies, and this one is definitely it. I usually do fall in love with anything ’60s, as I love the music and fashion from the day. Nikki Blonsky’s talent is absolutely incredible. It seems to be literally bouncing off the walls. John Travolta as Edna Turnblad was definitely the hit of the movie. It’s funny because a lot of ads for the movie are proclaiming it as “Grease” for our generation. It definitely has a lot of echoes from the hit movie of our parents’ years. Even ‘tween heartthrob Zac Efron caught my eye as a modern Danny Zuko.
More importantly, you walk out of this movie feeling so amazingly happy; so sure that anything can happen. There are interracial relationships with no scathing looks from the public, Segregation becomes integration, and the big girl gets one of the best-looking (and sweetest) guys in town.
I really hope that teens and young adults can go see the movie and come out wanting to make a difference in their own communities. I’ve always been one to believe in the power of movies and I feel like Hairspray really does have that extra “spritz” of fun and excitement that can do this world we live in some good.
Oh and P.S. they better keep casting Nikki Blonsky in movies. She’s wonderful.
