The other day at work I was having lunch with a few women that I work with. It started out as a low key I-am-going-to-savor-every-minute-of-this-break kind of lunch. Somehow the conversation turned from sharing our past weekend adventures to abortion. Well actually, it went from weekend adventures to workplace gossip to abortion. Needless to say it became quite the debate. Now while I don’t wish to delve into the specifics, I want to focus on the greater picture.
I was sitting listening to the sides of each woman, and while I certainly take my own view on abortion (pro-choice all the way) I was impressed that each woman completely stood by her reason while respectfully listening to the others. While I may not agree with a pro life choice, I think that it is truly fantastic that we are voicing our own opinions. A few men did walk in mid-debate but kept their lips sealed as they grabbed their lunches from the fridge and bolted. Regardless, I was just content to know that these women have a voice, a side and they want it to be heard.
Yes it was just in the lunchroom, and only a handful of people witnessed it but still, it’s better than being silent. Don’t get me wrong, we still have many many many many more baby steps to take but with anything in this world, there is always going to be more than one side. It’s always beneficial to hear all sides whether it’s in a televised debate or in the kitchen during lunch hour.
