Since I have three sisters and a brother, we get tons of magazines delivered to our house each month. I picked up the latest issue of Seventeen during lunch today and was surprised and very happy at how much the magazine has grown up.
Ashlee Simpson was on the cover, which was a little disheartening, as she is such a teen pop icon to me. As I read on, I was happy to see tips on frat parties, and the good, the bad and the ugly on sororities.
They actually had a decent health section as well. Instead of the usual, “My period is (fill-in-the-blank)…What do I do?” They decoded sex rumors. I would’ve given anything at age 17 to know what “precum” was and that you can get pregnant if you have sex in water.
It still has its young flair, with the TraumaRama, a staple since I was about 12. I also really liked the article “Get What You Want,” helping girls to be more confident.
Props to Seventeen for growing up with its readers, but still drawing in the ‘tweens who are just entering young adulthood.
