Hot off the feminist blogs… American Lawyer magazine reported that an editor at Glamour magazine presented a slide show about the “Do’s and Don’ts” of corporate fashion to 40 or more lawyers at a New York firm. Jezebel.com reports that the editor allegedly introduced the presentation with a slide of an African American woman wearing her hair in an Afro. According to the blog, the editor called the natural do, “A real no-no” adding, “As for dreadlocks: How truly dreadful! It is ’shocking’ that some people still think it ‘appropriate’ to wear those hairstyles at the office. ‘No offense,’ but those ‘political’ hairstyles really have to go.”
I am outraged. This is so foul. Since when is rocking a natural and being a beautiful strong woman a job liability. I’ll keep rocking my so-called “political” and “dreadful” hair do… I love who I am and I am beautiful no matter what Glamour’s editor thinks. It is absolutely ridiculous that some ignorant people believe that we have to hate and loathe ourselves by pretending to look like someone we aren’t in order to be professional. What is next? Will Glamour require all brunettes to dye their hair blonde to fit in with the more dominant culture and look more “professional” in the office. Will having black skin without bleaching it be too “political” to wear to work? What is so threatening about loving who we are and resisting societys push for our self hatred and destruction?
