Well, tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards definitely opened up my eyes to the fact that I’m getting older! I thought tonight’s production was mediocre, but did have its highlights. The excessive flashing lights, constant changing from one party to another upstairs at the Palms casino, and performance after performance were awfully distracting from the actual purpose of the night: to give out awards!
I feel like Britney’s opening act wasn’t incredibly bad, but she definitely ain’t what she used to be. She was clearly lip-synching (as usual!) She didn’t seem like she was up to dancing a whole lot and just seemed to not really be trying at all. I’ll admit, her new single is definitely club-ready. I’m curious to see if it will gain a following or not. Can I just say too that I was definitely shocked to realize I saw Miss Spears in concert SEVEN YEARS AGO when I was 15? Crazy to think Brit’s been around that long.
As much as I like live television, it felt like I just watched celebrities grind against each other in the latest fashions in swanky Palms suites. The various parties seemed like too much to cram into a 2 hour awards show. The dozen or so awards given out seemed to only be given to Rihanna and Rihanna only. I love her and “Umbrella,” but I felt like there wasn’t too much variety.
The great stuff definitely involved a lot of Justin Timberlake. I am dubbing him the Michael Jackson of our generation. Boy can that man dance! The fact that he pleaded with MTV throughout the telecast to play more videos was definitely a comforting fact. I remember back when I was young when MTV was mostly videos and TRL was actually a trendy show to watch. Seeing Justin up there all grown up made me think of how old I was! I remember his ‘N Sync days quite vividly. It’s scary to think that many 10-12 year olds out there probably don’t. My 12-year-old sister is definitely lucky that she grew up with four older siblings!
I also loved the last performance of the night with Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, and Justin. I am in love with Nelly’s new album, and I regret not buying the whole thing at once, as I am buying each single on iTunes as it comes out because I like them so much! Timbaland is definitely going to become the next greatest DJ/collaborator of our generation, and Justin, well let’s just say FutureSex/Lovesounds definitely deserves all the hype and accolades it’s received.
I think that the VMAs definitely should not have only been one night only. In high school, I loved being able to catch what I missed on the endless reruns that week. It’ll be nice I guess that MTV can show other stuff, but enough with the random reality shows! I saw a preview for some show where a dozen lesbians live in a house with a dozen straight guys. I was just thinking, what will they dream up next?! Who knows though, watch it catch on! Oddly enough, it intrigued me to at least tune into the first episode.
The fact that the show was in Vegas was so perfect. I was there for the first time on Spring Break last March, and I LOVED the city. I am definitely someone who loves to be around people, and chaos, and that is exactly what Vegas is all about. I’d recommend visiting at least once when you turn 21. I wished I was there for the VMA weekend because I would have loved to gawk at celebs all weekend!
