Well, Jane Green is slowly becoming one of my new favorite authors. As a lover of all things chick lit, I recently finished the book Second Chances that I got for my birthday back in July. I was intrigued that I picked it up this exact week, when I’m freaking out so much about jobs.
The back jacket of the book reads: “Page-turning, mesmerizing, and deliciously appealing, Second Chance will strike a chord with anyone who is still trying to figure life out.” My brain seemed to go DING DING DING THAT’S ME! So I picked it up and was hooked.
The book talks about a group of close British friends who find themselves reunited after nearly 20 years apart. They’re together again after one in their group dies unexpectedly in a terrorist attack. The book talked about modern fears such as terrorism and also age-old ones that seem to be closely united with terror: death.
My favorite character of the group is Holly. She’s the main character and you can’t help but cheer for her after all she’s gone through. Her narrations about wondering if she married the right man, and how you can’t possibly have passion and a best friend in a husband. Seeing her prove herself all wrong in the end makes me very happy. Then there’s Saffron. She’s sometimes like myself, a deliciously fun soul who at dark times feels somewhat lost. She turns to drink in the book, but later you’ll see what happens. She’s a famous movie star too, to add fuel to the fire.
The characters in the book are all brought together by their friend that was killed. This was the friend who seemed to have his life together, who knew exactly who he was and still remembered where he came from. In his own odd way, his death brought the rest of the 40-somethings who still had yet to figure themselves out. Despite the fact that in normal Jane Green style, she takes a while to get the ball rolling, she does a great job of tying up everyone’s loose ends.
Basically, I liked that she brought it to my attention that life doesn’t have to be figured out at 20, let alone 40! Definitely pick it up next time you’re in Barnes and Noble, it’s a quick, fun read.
