Okay, I need to vent. It’s a cloudy and snowy Sunday afternoon and as I am hugged tightly by two of my down comforters, I am excited to find a light Sunday afternoon movie (think You’ve Got Mail). Well as I click pass the college basketball games, and episode of Friends and several cartoon channels, I land on this show on Bravo called Millionaire Matchmaker. Intrigued, I leave the channel on. That was mistake number one.
Today’s episode: there are these two millionaire bachelors living in Hollywood who are looking for a young (under 35 preferably), intelligent and sexy woman to “fall in love with.” And apparently they have hired a woman to find them their dream girls. Okay, now who am I to judge? I realize that online matchmaking programs have become incredibly popular over the years, and hey, if it works then rock on right?
Well, my only frustration is the way that these women are presented on this show. Their credentials are admirable (some of these women own their own companies, are doctors, have graduated from ivy league colleges, etc) but when they are presented to these two men, those accomplishments are set on the back burner. They immediately supress their achievements and focus on praising these men, and dare I say “playing dumb.”
Now I am sure the “masterminds” behind this show perfectly cut/pieced together the show in order to gain audience appeal, but that leads me to the age old question: Why is it still entertaining to watch women dumb themselves down for men? WHY? Jessica, Paris, Nicole, do you have any answers for me? Of course these women are not in fact dumb because they have elevated themselves financially and socially by “losing” their intelligence for the public, but regardless of the money, aren’t brains and self respect worth anything?
I know this topic is nothing new, but until I start seeing change, I am going to keep bringing it up.
