Normally I wouldn’t devote an entire post to…myself, but today I am making an exception. As most of you know, I will receive my Bachelors Degree on May 18th. I have been interning at The Yale University Press since last June (with a three month break while I lived in London). I was hoping, desperately that they might offer me a full time position, but alas they have not.
So I began the dreaded job hunt. I contacted my university’s career services, I contacted publishing companies and I also resorted to Monster.com to post my resume to potential employers. Well bless you dearly Monster because last Friday I received a phone call from a computer company called PCNet which is located in Trumball, Connecticut (a mere 25 minutes from my home). They found my resume on Monster and wanted to tell me about an Accounting Assistant position that was open. As an English major, I was a bit skeptical, but I decided to take the interview. Most of the work I do for the press is in the Accounting Department so I do have experience.
Well the interview was yesterday and although my palms were drenched, my stomach in knots upon knots and my left leg was unable to stop moving, I nailed it. This morning I was offered the position! (Thank you, thank you).
The reason I share this story with you is because as a young woman, the field that I will (potentially, if I decide to take it. I have until Friday to make a decision) be working in is mostly a male dominated field. This is a computer software, hardware and services company. My potential boss (the vice president of finance) is a male, and I noticed that most of the employees are male. Intimidating? Certainly, but I am excited. From observations I have made and information I have gathered, women steer away from jobs involving science, math and computers. Why? We are just as capable if not more so.
I never thought that I would desire to work in a field such as Accounting and who knows, in a few years I may hate it and devote my entire life to writing best selling novels. But, I have discovered that I enjoy it now, and I must say, I am proud of myself for taking a risk (in a male dominated field) and given the position.
