X-rated Texting

By Jamia on April 14th, 2008 ·

In addition to stories I have heard from friends working in secondary education I found a news story about the increased amount of x-rated texting among teens. Appearently explicit videos, language, and photographic images are being passed around among some teens across the country. As a result, school administrators, religious and civic organizations, and concerned parents have sprung into action to stop this trend from developing further. What do you think about this?

I think that the trend is worrying as some of those sending the “x-rated” test messages are under the age of 18. But the point has to be made that people are unlikely to send dirty photos or videos to somebody that they didnt know and trust. Adults need to give teens more credit. They do have some sense (well most do anyway) and the vast majority of x-rated material doesnt end up in the hands of peadophiles.

A final point that has to be made is what can be done about it? The only option (apart from parental supervision of cell phone use at all times, which would be impracticle considering the amount of teens with cell phones these days) or a general screening by Telecom or Vodafone (or whoever your service provider is) of all text, picture and video messaging. This would be horribly time consuming and expensive to put into effect.

I think teens need to be trusted more. As i stated earliar, not every teenager you see walking down the street has taken explicit pics or videos of themselves.

How is that different than what other things teens do? Teens have sex, we all know that, and yet talking about it via text is news? Get over it. Schools have no business in it, schools are there to educate not to raise their students. If parents have a problem with it, then let the parents handle it.
