I am addicted to what is called one of the best new shows on television. Mad Men, which airs on Sunday evenings at 10 p.m. on AMC is the saga of the members of the Sterling Cooper advertising agency and the lovely ladies that work there and are married to the men.
The show takes place in the turbulent 1960s, an era I am quite fascinated with. This is one of the first shows that seems to really portray the “what goes on behind closed doors” phenomenon of the time. The way the men speak to their secretaries at their agency is appalling. It’s so funny how free men were to say whatever they wanted, no matter how chauvinistic, aggressive, or sexual.
The characters are really what makes the show. There’s the stereotypical housewife Betty Draper who is bored with life and seems to want more. Then there’s her husband, ad exec Donald Draper, a family man at home to his two children but away from home, he’s an overstressed, overworked philanderer. Peggy Olsen is the optimistic and ambitious secretary turned copy editor who’s looking to make it big in the advertising world among the big, bad mad men of Madison Ave.
New York City is where the show takes place, and as you all know from my previous posts, I think it’s a pretty magical city and a great place to film television shows and movies. Oh, and check out the fashion, it’s to die for! Polka dots and flouncy skirts abound.
