About

Girl Headquarters (GHQ, for short) is a blog for ‘tween and teenage girls, written by ‘tween and teenage girls, to discuss life as a girl, and things like girl power, politics, and youth culture.

We all know that being a girl is great. But there is a ton of pressure for young women in Generation Y to be perfect: we are supposed to be star scholars, the best athletes, amazing girlfriends, pretty, witty, and just plain flawless. Yet, at the same time, young women are stereotyped as being dumb, narcissistic, and apolitical. So what’s going on?

Here at GHQ, we want to foster positive discussion about what it’s like to be a young woman today, so we can empower each other to be happy, healthy, and have fun. We’ll be discussing tons of stuff, like politics, girl power, the media, celebrities, television, books, music, movies, magazines, makeup, fashion, school, college, work, friends, family, boyfriends, love, sex, relationships, money, class, race, self-esteem, and everything else in between! Also, we won’t deny it: we’re big on politics, and we think that young women can have a huge and very important influence on how the country is—or, rather—should be—run.

We were founded in April of 2007, as a blueprint project of Young People For, to provide an outlet for young women to discuss the issues that are important to them, and become progressive leaders and well-rounded gals, not tomorrow, but now.
